The core areas of research interest for IOSS include the socio-cultural, historical, political, strategic, economic, climate, natural resources and environmental issues in the Indian Ocean Region as well as the articulation of ideas and discussions about the role of major powers, geo-strategic competition and international politics effecting upon the politics in the region. IOSS is equally committed to focus on democracy, development, ethnicity, human rights, civil society, peoples’ movements, trade and commerce in the Indian Ocean region.
